Here at GLB Farms we have always been involved in growing and utilizing various varieties of bermudagrass for improved forage for the cattle. This soon developed into a commercial sprigging business which GLB Farms still operates today. While checking the grass plots one day we found some plants that we had not noticed before. We then began to take pollen from this new plant and crossed it with plants that had been seeded with Pasto Rico bermuda. The result of this was a grass with smaller stems, shorter joints, and more sprouts from the joints. This created a denser sod with adequate leafing ability. We also noticed that this grass was more vigorous to competition. I later moved some of the stolons to other plots to see if they would continue the same pattern. Later I moved it to larger plots for grazing and hay. It continued to be impressive, especially in rapid ground coverage and withstanding competition. -Gerald W. Sumrall |
